There are certain smells, sounds and tastes in life that will immediately bring back a memory. I clearly remember the day I heard “it’s a girl” during a doctor visit. It’s a girl! It’s a girl! After 2 sons, and many, many boys already born into the family, there would be a girl. Our world was soon inundated with everything pink and all the songs in the world were dedicated to her.
My nena is my life. My Christmas baby (yes, she was born on noche buena!), is the apple of her daddy’s eye and she’s is the light of my heart. Like every parent, we want the best for all our kids, but there’s no denying the fact that there’s something special about having a girl. My chiquita is still young. She still has a lot of growing up to do, but in her short years she has taught me so much. She’s taught me to love me as she loves me and to love life as she does.

There are many things we like to do together. We cook, we shop, we dance. When she was little, there is one song that I can swear was composed just for her. For Baby (For Bobbie), by John Denver will forever be my song for her. When she was a tiny, little one, I used to play it all the time with her. I would cradle her in my arms and sway. As she grew older, she would stand on a chair and dance with me. Now, she recognizes the song and dances on her own. This is our song. We bonded with this song.
What special song reminds you of your nena? Is there a song that floods your mind with memories?
