Road Trip to Monterey, California!

This is not a paid post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.  My familia and I were hosted by Embassy Suites.

California’s central coast has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. I don’t know why we are so drawn to it. From the peaceful rolling hills to the Pacific ocean’s crashing waves, my wish is to win the lotto and live somewhere along the central coast. Easy, huh?

Okay, so where did I leave off?  Oh, yes. Made to order breakfast. Mmmmm!

One of the luxuries of traveling, for this stay at home mom, is not cooking.  This is a true vacation for me. When booking a hotel stay, we’ve made it a priority to look for hotels that provide free breakfast. A full breakfast and not continental. It’s just so much easier when you travel with families. Trust me. It’s just one more reason to sleep in, knowing you can just roll out of bed and into the breakfast area and have a scrumptious meal waiting for you. The first morning of our stay at Embassy Suites Monterey Bay, my husband and I did just that.  The kids were still sleeping when we woke up, so we trotted our way to the temporary breakfast area where we were greeted with the sweet aroma of bacon, sausage, eggs, french toast, coffee, tea, made-to-order omelets, oatmeal, cereal, bagels, pastries, fresh fruits, yogurt and well you get the picture.

It was like a dream…

The breakfast offerings at Embassy Suites Monterey Bay has ben BY FAR one of the best breakfast (offered by a hotel)  we’ve had when we’ve traveled. Wow, the selection was incredible. It’s all you can eat and if you get there early enough, you end up having a pleasant meal with your spouse. Breakfast date anyone?

By the time we finished our meal and were enjoying sipping our coffee talking about our day, we got the texts of sleepy kids asking where we were. They came down for a hot breakfast and all I did was just sit and watch them eat. I’m telling you… it was a dream!

Once we went back to our room, we got dressed and headed out to explore gorgeous Monterey. We’ve never been here so we were eager to get out. The hotel gifted us with complimentary tickets to the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is a beautiful aquarium located in the historical district of Cannery Row and it’s bigger than any aquarium we’ve ever been to. After our time with the fishies, we made our teen son’s dream come true. We went to Laguna Seca.

My son, the car enthusiast, has been wanting to come to the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the longest time, so we were so happy to fulfill this long-time dream. Heck, we all enjoyed it!

We paid the $5 fee to enter the (technically a campground site) raceway and stood there for maybe an hour. There was a private event going on at the time, so sadly we weren’t able to visit the store or inside the main parking area. The folks at the raceway were still helpful and we were able to park close to an area of the track called “the corkscrew” and get a super, duper close up view of the cars speeding by. It’s was thrilling!

We had a family gathering later that day, so we drove around for a while just to taking in the scenery. My goodness, it’s so green up there. Other family-friendly activities include:

  • Bike riding along the coast; Adventures by the Sea
  • Fisherman’s Wharf
  • Dennis the Menace Park
  • Lake El Estero
  • Carmel beach
  • MY Museum, an interactive children museum for little ones

We clean up pretty nicely, right? I swear, I was fighting off the urge to run up the hills and belt out “The Hills Are Alive!”

Our time in Monterey was way too short. Our Sunday was met with breakfast again (YAS!) and a dreary, sad goodbye on the beach. We most definitely need to go back soon. Embassy Suites is going to be amazing once the renovations are over and I’m sure the weather is amazing year round.  So, gas up your cars and pack your bags. Let’s go on a road trip!
